What are the causes of breakthrough bleeding when not on a form of birth control?

What can cause breakthrough bleeding? I've read that it's quite common on birth control and if a polyp exists...but neither of those apply to me.

* Regular 28 day periods

* Never been on BC

* All pap smears are normal

Thanks.What are the causes of breakthrough bleeding when not on a form of birth control?
Hormone imbalances (an example only) can sometimes cause this. Also infection such as with the cervix (another example only) can cause breakthrough bleeding to occur.

I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think could be going on.
