I'm thinking about a Minerva IUD because I got pregnant on the pill, and had a bad reaction to the patch. What did you choose to use and why? What form of birth control did you use after your baby was born?
After my first son, I took the Depo Provera injections for a year and a half but didn't like it because it made me gain 30 pounds in that time. I did like that I wasn't getting a period though. After the year and a half, I switched to the Mirena IUD. I loved it because the hormones are directed to the uterus and not all over the body so I didn't have the weight gain like with Depo. I got my period back but it went from six days to three. I did get pregnant with my second son with it (he's 8 months old now) and had it removed when I was five weeks pregnant. I decided to get it again at my six week checkup because I'm awful at remembering to take a pill, am allergic to adhesives so I couldn't use the patch and would be afraid I wasn't putting a diaphram in correctly. I would recommend the IUD though; I think it's the most ';user friendly'; with regards to weight gain and all and has a 99.9% effective rate. What form of birth control did you use after your baby was born?
Which pill were you on when you got pregnant? Were you taking it at the exact same time every day?
I went on the low dose pill after giving birth, but I also breast fed, so the two combined to be effective birth control for me.
I have a medical condition that precludes using the pill.
I have used depo-provera, but that caused me to gain weight!
IUDs scare me....
My husband doesn't like to have to do anything.... LOL
So that leaves me with one option: diaphragm with spermacide. It's not very spontaneous, but it is simple to use and very effective.
Whatever you do dont choose the IUD. A friend of mine choose that once and the dr almost ripped her trying to insert the stupid thing. I chose Depo provera. Its effective and you only have to have a shot in the hip every 3 months....plus ur monthly flow slows and then stops for most women. The only side effect is that some may gain a little weight. Hope this helps.
I decided to go with Depo-vera. I was told it would help with breastfeeding and I'm so forgetful when it comes to taking oral meds that Depo was I thought the best for me!
Condoms. I can't take birth control, because it doesn't agree with me.
We have used condoms for nearly 8 years, and never had a scare.
I chose the regular copper IUD.
Regular hormonal birth control (pills, mini-pill, depo shot) makes me fat and crazy.
I wanted a diaphragm, but my cervix is too high.
I considered the Mirena IUD, but that also has a small amount of hormones. Since an IUD is a longer term decision, I didn't want to have to put it in and then remove it if the hormones were making me fat and crazy again.
Since I am nursing, I can't even use regular pills. So the regular IUD it is.
ETA: a couple things
Depo Provera made me gain 60 pounds within 4 months. I had every side effect under the sun and it nearly ended my marriage when my libido went to zero (hmm, maybe because they also use Depo to 'chemically castrate' sex offenders?) Depo Provera was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made in my entire life. I am not joking. Look up the info online for it and read the issues people have had with it.
Use a *reputable* provider for an IUD. I used my midwives, they have never in all their years of practiced perforated a uterus. After the midwife inserted it, we walked down the hall and they did an ultrasound to make sure that it hadn't perforated and that the placement was correct. Even if the IUD does perforate, that doesn't affect your future fertility or anything.
It was a little like a contraction when they put it in, and I experienced about a week of lessening cramping, but if condoms aren't an option, an IUD might work.
If I had the choice, I would have used a diaphragm.
i am on the depo shot and i have been bleeding for 2 months. my son is 5 months old. but i dont know if i would recommend it or not because i still have to get the second shot and i heard when you get the 2nd dose you stop your period all together...so that must be nice. im going to get it ahead and see what happens
We use condoms as I'm not comfortable with any hormonal BC when breastfeeding. We've been using condoms for over 5 years and never had a problem with them or with them failing.
that's a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted
