I find that the new wave of Evangelical Christianity is shockingly similar to ancient Roman mystery cults. Essentially mainstream religion has become......well too mainstream so people are looking for a new more enriching connection to the divine.





Now the downside of this movement is that it ignores 2000 years of Biblical scholarship and human reason. Throughout almost all of Christian history, the Bible was never read as a literal document. From St. Augustine to Pope Benedict XVI, the Bible was ALWAYS thought of as largely metaphorical. But since the 1950's suddenly ever body is a theology scholar.





I think modern Americans like the idea that you can read the Bible and make judgments for themselves. For the first time in Human history, you don't need to know Greek, Hebrew, Latin, or Aramaic to have your own Megachurch. You don't need to have an understanding of historical or cultural context in understanding the Bible. You don't even need to read the works of other scholars and theologians. All you need to do is be barely literate and have an agenda to be supported in the Bible.





I will admit that I have a strong Catholic bias, but I have nothing but respect for all mainstream protestant faiths. What I do have a problem with, is what I interpret as a complete lack of respect for the word of God, and this lack of respect is manifested is taking scripture as face value and refusing to look deeper. Failing to consider who wrote these documents and why. Failing to consider what two millenia of brilliant scholars have said about a specific issue.

To your initial question, ABSOLUTELY! As for imaginary sky pixie, I'm not down with that. Believe that God exists or not, but there's no need to mock Him. However, those who try to scare others into believing, this isn't Godly, no siree. It's the spiritual bullying I can't stand, but God, I love with everything in me.
