IUDs are more effective than pills. There are two types: hormonal IUDS, which last 5 years and release small amounts of hormones into your body, and copper IUDs which are non-hormonal and last up to 10 years. They are small t-shaped plastic and metal devices that are inserted (by a doctor) into a woman's uterus. Many doctors won't insert one into a young woman's uterus because a) they slightly increase the risk of complications form STIs b) they are harder to insert into a woman who has not given birth and c) young, childless women are more likely to expel the IUD. They are still a VERY viable option. The hormonal IUD (Mirena in the States) can eliminate periods and cramping, and has all the same side effects that pils have. The copper IUD will cause heavier and more painful periods, but has no hormonal side effects.

Nuvaring is a small ring you insert into your vagina for three weeks, and it releases hormones into your body. It can be worn during sex, or you can take it out for up to an hour. You do three weeks on and one week off to have your period. It works just like BC pills do, but without the inconvenience of a pill every day.

The patch is similar, but you stick a little patch onto your skin and absorb the hormones that way. You do one patch per week, and take your fourth week off to have your period.

There is also the hormonal shot, Depo. I NEVER recommend Depo because you can only safely use it for 2 years... it causes loss of calcium in your bones and can lead to brittle, fragile bones and teeth. Not only that, but it has an increased risk of blood clots. Its other side effects, such as weight gain and spotting, are also more severe. It IS still an option for the short term - you get one shot every three months.

edit: I almost forgot the implant!! The implant (not avaliable in Canada) is a small rod inserted under the skin in your arm (usually) that slowly releases hormones into your body for three years. It is quite effective. The most common side effect is constant spotting for the first few months, after which it settles down and you have shorter/lighter periods. It has all the side effects of hormonal methods, and is fairly new... meaning there haven't been any extended clinical trials about it. SO far it seems to perform well and be fairly safe.

All of these are just as effective - or better - than the typical use of the pill. What is the best form of birth control other than pills?
I have been on the depo shot for a year now and it works very well, i have been with the same guy for the amount of time and have quite a bit of sex and have never got pregnant. it says it makes you gain weight but i haven't gained anything. you go in and get a shot every 3 months and it does hurt a little but nothing serious. i get the shot in my lower stomach area alternate sides each time. ive heard its less effective in the butt but im not sure. check it out! its defiantly what i would recommend.
Abstinence
