I'm thinking about switching from the pill because i forget to take it sometimes and I spot. Are the risks still the same with the shot? I also heard that they insert a long skinny tube in your arm is that true? How much different is the pill form of birth control from the shot you get every so often?
I highly recommend you take time to read the information about birth control on www.plannedparenthood.org
But personally, I was the same way. I'd always forget to take the pill on time. And if you're at all sexually active, that is a risk.
Depoprovera (the shot) has been proven to cause long term effects such as an increase chance of developing osteoporosis (a bone disease). It's convenient, but medically risky.
I switched to the Nuva Ring a couple of years ago and never looked back. It's a small plastic ring you insert in your vagina. You leave it there for 3 weeks, and remove it for one to have your period (much like the sugar pills). You only have to think about it twice a month, so there is much less of a chance to mess up!
But please, have a look at the information offered by Planned Parenthood. It'll be the most reliable source out there. How much different is the pill form of birth control from the shot you get every so often?
The ';tube'; you mentioned is called Implanon, it's completely unrelated to the shot. Implanon is a small plastic-like stick about the size of a match stick that is implanted into your upper arm that releases a constant dose of hormone into your blood stream. It can be left in for up to three years, but can be removed sooned if you want. It's a bit like Mirena (the IUD that is inserted into your uterus), except that it goes in your arm. I just got Implanon inserted last week, and so far I love it. I haven't had any spotting so far, or any other side effects for that matter. It's quite possible I won't have a period for the next three years! Some women do get irregular bleeding because of Implanon, but this usually goes away after 6 months to a year. You'll hear a lot of people bitching about Implanon and saying that it's horrible, but like all forms of birth control it affects all women differently. You may not have any problems at all with it. Plus it's nice because you don't have to go back to the doctor every three months like you with the shot. Check out the official Implanon website for more info if you're interested. I would definitely recommend Implanon instead of the shot.
The shot and the implant are different.
Both of those are progesterone-only methods, whereas the pill (unless it's the mini pill) is combined oestrogen-progesterone.
The side effects can be different, however many women seem to get really bad side effects with the shot so I wouldn't recommend that. Then again you might not want an implant in your arm either. Also most women stop getting periods on those methods.
I was on the shot for about 3 years and never had a period. The only issue i had with it was now that im off and trying to get pregnant i'm having a hard time. Also some girls gain quite a bit of weight on the shot. Well i never had a long skinny tube put into my arm. Also on the shot when you start to get your period whenever you decide to stop it. It was probably the most paid i've ever been in.
no that isn't true a shot is a normal sirenge small. and its the same as the pill. the only difference is that with the pill you get ur period every month and with the shoot depending on how often you get it u get your period.per say if u get it every 3 months u'll get ur period every 3 months.
